About Trinity Lutheran Church

Old Trinity Building on SE Main Street

Trinity congregation was founded in 1917, and is affiliated with the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.

Founded on 1917 in what was then the small rural town of Hillsboro (population 2000), the original congregation consisted of 10 charter members meeting in various places around town. As they continued to grow in numbers, they purchased their very own church on the corner of Third and Walnut, in 1923.

Change has always been part of Trinity congregation as was evidenced by the ending of German services in 1941. As the community changed and grew so did Trinity. 1941 also saw the congregation buy land at 5th and Main and by 1948 construction began. Trinity saw phenomenal growth during the years following relocation going from 200 to 700 members.

In the early '70's, Trinity began to plateau as they reached maximum capacity for the facility. In fact as a temporary solution, Trinity's staff in July of 1991, relocated their offices to the 5th Street house to make room for Sunday school and other activities. Although growth numerically had reached a plateau, ministry growth had continued through the years. Our ministry had been blessed during those many years at 5th and Main, and as we looked ahead, we, as a congregation, had realized that in order to faithfully carry out the Great Commission and meet the needs of our growing community we had to relocate once again.

After 15 years of meetings and much discussion, the Long Range Planning Committee, in 1991, brought a recommendation to the congregation to relocate. In the April Voter's Meeting of that same year, the congregation voted to buy land for the future. Trinity's first ever Capital Fund drive began later that year and in 1993 a proposal was offered and passed to purchase the 10 acre Freudenthal property on the corner of River Road and Minter Bridge Road.

A Land and Building Task Force was soon in place and they began working with architect, Rosco Lawless. In December 1995, Trinity's Voter's Assembly approved the site plans and the following October, we were able to host our first Sunday service in the celebration center of our new facility. Although not fully completed, our facility has a spectacular celebration center, narthex, chapel, kitchen, library, staff offices, and a plethora of classrooms and meeting rooms. Our future goals are to expand by adding a large sanctuary and three more classroom wings.

Trinity now has nine elected boards, active Stephen Ministers, two worship services with diverse worship styles, growing children's and youth ministry programs, Preschool, active LWML woman's groups, Links of Love prayer chain, LifeLight Small group ministries, Parish Nurse programs, a food pantry and many other Human Care ministries.

As we look forward the challenge is clearly before us as God calls us to serve a growing community now 70,0000 strong, a majority of which are unchurched. While the challenge is great, we know "that God is able to do immeasurable more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…" (Ephesians 3:20)

We believe that we are saved by God's grace through faith in Christ Jesus as the only way to heaven. Good works and activities of service are a natural response or "thank you" for what God has done for us. We offer both traditional and contemporary worship services, Bible study groups, a Christian preschool, and indoor and outdoor sports activities. The large Celebration Center is used for worship on Sunday, hosts large group activities and is available for the community during the week.
